Why this car

The Corolla II is small, light and front-wheel drive, which makes it the wrong shape for drag racing in almost every way that matters. That is the point. Weight is the one advantage a small hatch has, so the whole build is organised around keeping it and spending everything else on repeatable launches and clean shifts rather than peak horsepower.

The 2ZZ-GE is naturally aspirated and stays that way. A turbo would find the 11s faster, but it would also change what the car is: an all-motor hatch beating cars with twice the power on the sheet.

What 11.99 actually needs

The target is a flat eleven. Weight and power set the ceiling; the 60 ft decides whether the car gets near it. Put numbers in and see where a change lands.

The textbook weight-to-power formulas were written around rear-wheel-drive cars and flatter their numbers badly on a front-wheel-drive hatch. These are calibrated instead against the Flea's own 12.079 at 112.05 mph, so 204 WHP at 1,770 lb reads back as the pass the car actually ran. Change one input at a time and the answer tells you what that change is worth. It still assumes the launch and the shifts hold up.

Where the time is left

The launch

1.630 is a strong short time for a front-wheel-drive car on 23x8-13 slicks. Holding that number consistently matters more than shaving another few thousandths off it once.

The middle

This is the honest weak point. Shift quality between 330 ft and 1,000 ft is where a hanging gear or a poor RPM drop quietly costs a tenth that never shows up on the dyno.

The top end

112 mph from an all-motor 1.8 at 1,770 lb is close to the limit of the current package. Getting the trap speed up means real power or real weight, not tuning around the edges.

The air

Density altitude moves a naturally aspirated car more than most people allow for. Check the live track air before judging a pass against your personal best.

How the car is developed. Every pass is logged on the FT550, compared against a reference pass sector by sector, and analysed before the next change is made. One change at a time, measured. That is the whole method.
